Recently, my class watched a movie based around comedy and the different types of comedic techniques such as dramatic irony or situational irony and so on. Sure it sounds fancy but trust me it’s not as complicated as it sounds. Anyways, as the class rejoices in getting to spend time watching a movie instead of working we obviously have to get a gigantic packet to accompany the movie, it was probably only four or six pages but I was still devastated. So as the class read it silently there was this one line that stuck out to me in the page ” You can’t be mean and funny at the same time!”, being in the center of the page and in bold probably helped a lot but either way it really hit home.
There is a fine line between joking and insulting, it’s fine to make a joke but when it gets to the point that you’re openly making fun of how someone acts or looks so that others can join with you and laugh at them, that’s when it becomes an insult and eventually you’ll become that weird person that is the only laughing at their own joke. Saying “Just Kidding!’ doesn’t fix everything just like how saying sorry doesn’t make everything okay.
